Dr. Toshiro Arima joined ClassNK in 1989. After a career including roles in research on hull structures and rule development, he became General Manager of External Affairs Division in 2009. He was seconded to Japan’s National Maritime Research Institute as Director of Structural Strength Evaluation Department in 2014. He returned to ClassNK in 2017 and took up the position of Director of Rule Development Division. On top of that, he was also assigned to General Manager of Digital Transformation Center in 2019, incorporating digital technologies for the future shape of the society.
Dr. Arima was one of project managers leading IACS FSA study on Bulk Carrier Safety in late 1990s and early 2000s. After that, Dr. Arima has been charring IACS Expert Group on Goal Based Standards (IACS EG/GBS) since 2008. Dr. Arima was promoted to Executive Vice President in 2024, concurrently serving as Director of Research and Development Division. He supervises the ClassNK’s R&D, rule development, and relations with governments and international bodies.
Having completed the doctoral program in the Department of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering, School of Engineering, University of Tokyo in March 1989, Dr. Arima received his Doctor of Engineering from University Tokyo in September 1989
