Dan Mangis is serving as the Chargé d’ Affaires ad interim at the
U.S. Embassy in Nicosia, Cyprus during the temporary absence
of Ambassador Julie S. Davis. He arrived in Nicosia in July 2024
as the Deputy Chief of Mission. Most recently, he was the
Deputy Director for the Office of Northern European, Baltic, and
Arctic Security Affairs in the State Department’s Bureau of
European and Eurasian Affairs. His most recent overseas
assignment was as the Deputy Public Affairs Officer and
Spokesperson at Embassy Amman, Jordan. Other domestic assignments include a detail to the
National Security Council and serving as the Senior France and Monaco Desk Officer, in addition
to earlier overseas assignments in Spain, Iraq, Sweden, and Mexico.
Prior to joining the Foreign Service, Dan worked as an attorney and high school speech and
debate coach. He studied at the University of Alabama (BA, MA) and the University of Texas at
Austin (JD, PhD). He is also an alumnus of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Seminar
XXI Fellowship Program. Dan is married to Dr. Susan Szmania, a scholar with expertise in
violence prevention. They have two school age daughters.
