Dr. Anand Hiremath, CEO – Sustainable Ship and Offshore Recycling Program
Dr. Anand Hiremath is a highly accomplished leader in sustainable ship recycling, combining his strong foundation in civil and environmental engineering with over a decade of specialized expertise. He holds a master’s degree in Environmental Engineering from IIT Guwahati and earned his PhD from IIT Bombay, where his pioneering research on the Integrated Risk Assessment Framework for Best Practices in Ship Recycling set new standards for safety and environmental responsibility in the industry.
As Chief Sustainable Officer at GMS, Dr. Hiremath plays a pivotal role in transforming ship recycling practices. He ensures that shipyards comply with the stringent guidelines of the Hong Kong Convention (HKC) for safe and environmentally sound recycling, and under his leadership, the company has achieved remarkable results. Dr. Hiremath has overseen more than 100 Inventory of Hazardous Materials (IHM) surveys and successfully guided the recycling of over 130 end-of-life vessels through the Sustainable Ship and Offshore Recycling Program (SSORP). His commitment to safety is equally impressive, with over 700 free safety awareness sessions conducted at recycling yards across the Indian subcontinent, benefiting more than 10,500 workers.
Beyond his operational leadership, Dr. Hiremath is a key figure in educating the next generation of ship recycling professionals as Course Director for the Lloyd’s Maritime Academy’s Ship Recycling course in London. His global influence extends through his involvement in major international research projects like the EU-funded DIVEST initiative and the Green Alang Initiative, aimed at improving the environmental standards of ship recycling in India. His work has been widely published in prestigious international scientific journals, further solidifying his role as a thought leader.
Dr. Hiremath is also the author of The Green Handbook: A Practical Checklist to Monitor the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships, a go-to resource in the industry. His extensive certifications include being a Lead Auditor for ISO 45001, 9001, and 45001, a certified Hazmat expert, a Social Auditor, a Responsible Steel Auditor, and a sustainability practitioner. He is also an empaneled lead auditor with the Indian Register of Shipping for several environmental and ISO standards, further showcasing his authority in driving sustainable practices globally.
